My Story

Traffic was fine. Fireflies are better.

Chicago and I have a history. I lived here twenty years ago for three years, fell in love with it, left, and came back three years ago for round two. I still love this city: the lakefront, the museum afternoons, the grit. But at a certain point, sitting outside trying to unwind while tuning out sirens and bus brakes just stopped working.

Maybe I've watched one too many Hallmark movies where the city girl trades her big city life for a cozy, small town, but lately I just want a quiet porch, real fireflies, and a front-row seat to watch the corn grow.

If you're like me, you don't hate the city; you're just ready for a life that doesn't require constant noise-cancellation.

I'm a web designer saving for a quiet plot of land and a farmhouse in Indiana. I started The Buttered Porch as a way to start living that quiet life right now, long before the moving truck ever shows up. Everything in this shop goes straight into the farmhouse fund. They are literal planks in the porch I'm building.

If you've ever stared out in a cityscape and then shifted your priorities, you already get it. Consider this a way to live a little of it together before we get there.

Coming this fall

Long, quiet hours on the porch: rain on a tin roof, a settling fire, crickets, and the occasional cat. No talking. No mid-roll breaks.
